Those of you who have read my review G5 surprised that I have bought an MX518 instead of a G5. I am going to break pretty high on the G5, and rather sad, but I was curious about the MX518, if for no other reason than it is the yardstick by which the G5 is so often compared.
I have a new mouse for about a week and it is difficult to distinguish performance-wise from a G5 was. But there are some differences worth mentioning.
What I Miss About the G5 –
Separate X and Y axis sensitivity are used – this feature was only available in SetPoint’s Game Mode but give me some flexibility in opening up the horizontal sensitivity to close-in turns, without vertical accuracy.
Adjustable Weights – My G5 as described in my report, weighs 140g, the MX518 weighs 105g. The weight of engine on the G5 is the whole difference. I noticed the difference, but have adjusted without too much trouble.
Sensitivity Indicator – Sometimes I would lose track of the mouse sensitivity and had a look at the G5 LED display, which in some cases, easier than wiggling the mouse.
What I Like better than the MX518 –
Two thumb buttons, which I designed for lifting sensitivity and lowering a la user set. xml adjustment similar to what I am on my G5. Their location is a bit high.
BTW, the SetPoint software will detect the MX518 and add users. xml with the default settings for the MX518. That’s cool, as one (to switch back or parallel) to allow a G5 without any adjustment.
Toss-Ups –
The size and shape of the MX518 and G5 are identical, but my G5 had a slightly coarser structure, both at the “upper side and its” grips. The MX518 is slippery in both areas, so prefer those that could be based on palm friction grip a G5, are prone. I tend to keep my thumb and little finger on the mouse so that it does not use as noticeable.
Conclusion –
The G5 was the best mouse I ever owned, but the MX518 is an acceptable and cost-effective alternative.
Public Service Announcement – How to “Hack Deep” My MX518 – < , br />
The SetPoint utility keeps its’ configuration information in a file called user. xml (I do not know the way, but it is saved in the Documents and Settings directory on XP). Edit The file itself is not difficult – they are XML, a text editor will do. This is when a changes is important. SetPoint protect against accidental changes or deletions by rebuilding the user. xml file when it quits. So you must do the following:
1) Close SetPoint you, either from the system tray or go to the Task Manager.
2) Copy the user. xml Edit to the user. xml. orig suffix or what ever you use to save an archive copy.
3) User. xml increase by copying and pasting the normal tags for the “sensitivity” to 4-key. For the MX518, I also copy and the normal “decrease sensitivity” button to button 5 tags. If you’re like me you use it for games that you want for “SetPoint game mode”, then you must also change the section of users. xml play with game mode. Otherwise, the change is not when you run the game.
4) Delete last_user. xml.
5) Open SetPoint. In my case I logged out of XP then logged back on to load SetPoint.
The bottom line is that outside of game mode, both the standard increase / decrease sensitivity buttons and the thumb keys can change the sensitivity of the mouse. In the game mode, only the thumb buttons can change the sensitivity of the mouse. This is because the game mode to another XML syntax as the default mode has. Conceivable this technology can be programmed arbitrarily all the buttons. Be sure to backup user. xml before charging your account!

I like this mouse very much. ) With the right mouse pad (a microthin Wow! Pad by Office Depot, this mouse glides nicely, never seen a better one. The most important buttons are easy to push (Microsoft also has this right). The front and back buttons are a bit small, but work well. The scroll wheel is not as nice as the MS Intellimouse 4, as it still clicks and is more difficult to roll. Never use the tilt wheel on the MS mouse. It’s game time, where this mouse shines. The mouse tracks, no matter how fast I move the mouse. The mouse never sleeps so always responds perfectly. Frankly, I have not any use, I needed to find the mouse resolution () that is speed, but in trials that is easy to change.
Feel is good, so suitable for middle to small most of my family. Cord is thin and a little stiff, so it does not always lay completely flat (I have not, that could not be found). Very easily. Anatomically shaped well to fit the palm of his hand.
With Win XP, as soon as I plugged in, loaded drivers and program worked without trouble.

Developed after 6 months, my MX518 to be a problem with the left mouse button. The button still works, but it is a werid squeaking / scraping tactile feeling when you press it. I believe this is due to internal plastic parts deform with time. All of this was used for the mouse was light browsing. I loved the mouse, but this is the second Logitech mouse with button problems (G5 is the other). I want Microsoft’s offer research before buying another MX518.

I bought this mouse in April 2005 and I have not had a problem with it. Perfect tracks on all surfaces that I’ve tested (though I’m sure, highly reflective which might cause a little problem). Frankly, I have not found the DPI switching on a feature I use very often, but it does not hurt.
Buttons have a very nice touch. Particularly useful are the two buttons on the left side of the mouse, which defaults to paging forward and back in your pages. After some time with this mouse, it is difficult to surf the internet with another mouse, you’ll move again by pressing the side buttons do not exist in an endeavor to reach. Excellent mouse. It is only slightly better than the 510, so if you already recommend the mouse, not me. The sensitivity adjustment button is not useful for Counter-Strike, but I hear its very useful for BF2.
When these pro-grade mouse can be bought for games, I would recommend buying a quality mousepad with themselves. The mouse feet on the pad is very good and it glides like ice on most surfaces, but nice mouse pads, in my opinion a bigger difference than the mouse itself. I would be a Steelpad QcK recommend that it is very cheap and made of cloth, but it is resilient. He has just the right amount of friction. If you do not like cloth mousepads type, there are so many other good, like Icemat Steelpad or another.
